Seamless
Switching

Changing providers with confidence.

Switching indemnity provider
should never create uncertainty.

Our priority is simple: ensuring your cover works historically, currently
and into retirement. Once that’s clear, the mechanics are straightforward.

We take the time to understand how your existing cover is structured and how it will transition.
That includes making sure there are no gaps, no overlaps or no unnecessary complexity.

Whether you’re moving from a defence union or another insurer, the process is handled carefully and explained clearly, so you always know where you stand.

When everything is set up properly, switching becomes what it should be:
a considered step forward, not a risk.

The details, properly understood.

Indemnity for consultants is typically provided in one of two ways:

  • Claims Occurred (commonly used by defence unions, providing discretionary indemnity agreements)
  • Claims Made (used by insurers, providing legally
binding contractual insurance policies)

Both can provide seamless protection. They simply do it in different ways, with consultants often having a mixture of Claims Occurred and Claims Made cover.

What matters is understanding how your existing cover
operates before making any change.

At Primus, we take the time to review both your current and historic arrangements in detail. This ensures your cover
transitions properly, with no gaps and no uncertainty around how past work is protected.

Once that position is clear, we can structure your policy so everything aligns-providing seamless protection across past, present and future practice.

Switching to Primus.

It’s important to us that you feel completely comfortable when changing providers. Our first step is always to review your current arrangement in detail. We confirm how historic work is protected, how your current year is structured, and what happens at retirement. Select your current provider type below to see how the transition would work.

If you ever decide
to leave Primus.

We hope our competitive premiums and first-class service will be enough to keep you on board, but if you do decide you’d like to move to another indemnity provider, there’s nothing stopping you.

You aren’t tied into us in any way.

Medical indemnity insurance is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and the market is structured to allow movement between insurers without loss of historic protection.

Your new provider would arrange appropriate cover for your historic work, so you’ll always be fully covered. You should only ever need to deal with your current insurer.

Cover into retirement.

Every Primus policy includes run-off cover of at least 21 years from your final day of practice.

This will pick up claims for any work undertaken in the policy period and retroactive period, ensuring full peace of mind.

With clinical negligence claims, patients have 3 years to initiate a civil claim for compensation from the date of the injury or from the date of knowledge of the injury. This limitation doesn’t apply to children, with the 3-year limit starting from their 18th birthday, hence the 21 years.

The structure ensures your work remains protected long after you retire.
